goodorgodWas watching John Bevere share a short message on his new book Good or God? when I thought to remind you: be careful about looking for the good in things.

This is the way the Bible teaches that Eve was deceived. She looked at the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and only saw the good.  “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” (Genesis 3: 6)

There is a double temptation at work here: a temptation to do evil by seeing the good in it and a temptation to become an evangelist for evil by sharing the good you’ve seen.

One modern day example (among many) is people’s support of Planned Parenthood. I’ve been reprimanded and exhorted by many of my more liberal friends that I should be supportive of all the good they do, but I cannot. At its root, Planned Parenthood is established for the purpose of destroying ‘human weeds’ and eliminating the ‘unfit’, which means immigrants, minorities, poor whites, and the handicapped. This is a purpose for which they have never repented and a purpose for which they have been very successful in pursuing.

Looking for the good in things sounds so noble, so virtuous, and so altruistic but most of the time it’s a cover, just like the leaves Adam and Eve used, to hide the evil we are either tolerating or promoting.

Last year, Planned Parenthood was exposed for the practice of harvesting and selling baby body parts. Did their supporters insist they repent and sin no more? No, they were mad and brought legal action against those who had moved the “good” leaves to expose the evil behind them.

Be careful. Jesus does not want us to be deceived. Remember, grace begins in repentance. I list a few verses from Proverbs 16 to help you remember.

“All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD.” (Proverbs 16: 2)

“The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: Though hand join in hand, they will not go unpunished. Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided.” (Proverbs 16: 5 – 6)
